Part of the allure that comes with the Los Angeles Rams acquiring Matthew Stafford is the fact that he’ll now be paired with one of the smartest head coaches in the NFL. Sean McVay is an offensive-minded guy who’s a brilliant play designer and caller, making him a perfect match for Stafford – a quarterback who can win from within structure or after a play breaks down.

Stafford immediately made the Rams one of the Super Bowl favorites when the trade happened and it’s easy to see why. Peter Schrager of NFL Network loves the pairing and called it a “perfect union” of quarterback and coach.

“I’ll be honest, I’m biased on this one. Matthew Stafford is one of my favorite players and people in the NFL and Sean McVay is one of my favorite coaches and people in the NFL,” Schrager said. “And I think this is the perfect union. They’re both so excited right now and I know what McVay is doing. He’s in the lab right now working up an offense around not only Stafford’s arm, but Stafford’s – quote-unquote from McVay, ‘above-the-neck’ ability – what this guy can do at the line of scrimmage. Be able to dissect defenses and operate from there. I think they’re loaded. I don’t even think they need Julio Jones. I think right now they’re not only the favorites in the NFC West, but I might be picking them to go for the Super Bowl out of the NFC.”

Former NFL cornerback DeAngelo Hall was on Good Morning Football with Schrager for this segment, and while he also likes the Rams, he added one reason for caution.

“Matthew Stafford has never been under this much pressure – ever – through the course of his career. Can’t wait to see it,” Hall said.

According to BetMGM, the Rams are the third-favorites to win the Super Bowl (tied with the 49ers) at +1200 and Stafford has the seventh-best odds to win NFL MVP. So clearly the oddsmakers also like both the team and quarterback to have a successful season.
