After a successful season 2020-21 campaign, the Charlotte Hornets are expected to pick up the team option on head coach James Borrego, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
The Hornets finished the season 33-39 and in 10th in the Eastern Conference, falling in the first play-in game to the Pacers. Injuries derailed a promising season that saw the Hornets among the top teams in the Eastern Conference at one point.
After a win over Milwaukee on April 9, the Hornets sat at 27-24 on the year. Over the final five weeks of the season, though, the team finished the regular season 6-15 in their final 21 games, including the play-in blowout loss to the Pacers.
However, the young Hornets made vast improvements this season, most notably Miles Bridges. LaMelo Ball’s rookie campaign could hardly have gone better, injury notwithstanding, as he appears to be the favorite to win Rookie of the Year.
Borrego will enter the 2021-22 season in the final year of his current contract. To avoid Borrego being a lame-duck coach in the final year of his deal, it would not be surprising to also see the team agree to at least a one-year extension with the team in the coming weeks.
