James White sheds light on ‘strange’ free agency process

James White detailed why the free agency process was so strange for him.

New England Patriots running back James White went into detail about why he re-signed with the organization during a meeting with the media on Tuesday.

White has carved out a solid career in New England. He has recorded 1,240 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns as well as 3,184 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Patriots.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft, he has won three super Bowls with New England, and has carved out a niche as a dependable receiving back.

White indicated why the free agency process was so different for him.

“Free agency is really strange, honestly,” said White, who’s back on a one-year, $2.5 million contract. “Day to day, everything kind of changed a little bit. Some days, a team may have interest; the next day, they may not; and the day, they might have interest (again). So it’s a little different than you can ever imagine. It’s a lot of worrying what’s going to be next and where you’re going to be at next.

“But obviously, the Patriots were in the mix the whole time, and it’s good to be back and get back with these guys and just find a way to improve. And it starts now.”

With a revamped roster and a deep backfield, white should certainly have a chance to compete for playing time. He brings veteran stability into the mix, with many new faces on both sides of the ball.
