3 observations: Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons lead Sixers past shorthanded Spurs

Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers were able to escape past the San Antonio Spurs on the road on Sunday.

The Philadelphia 76ers began a 3-game road trip on Sunday deep in the heart of Texas against the San Antonio Spurs and they had their job made easier when the Spurs found out they would be missing DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, Dejounte Murray, and Derrick White.

The Sixers were able to build a big lead, but they had to hang on late as the Spurs were not going to give up without a fight. Philadelphia was able to walk out of AT&T Center with a 113-111 win in overtime as Ben Simmons tipped in a miss at the buzzer in the extra session and help the team move back into the No. 1 seed in the East all alone. Joel Embiid led Philadelphia with 34 points and 12 rebounds in this one.

Seth Curry had a huge night with 22 points on 6-for-6 shooting from deep and five rebounds, Danny Green added 11 and five rebounds, Dwight Howard had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks off the bench, and Simmons was struggling, but he was also huge on the defensive end as well with his clutch tip-in to go long with five assists and fsix rebounds.

Here are the three observations following a squeaker of a win:
