The Houston Texans drafted former Stanford Cardinal quarterback Davis Mills with the No. 67 overall pick in Round 3 of the 2021 NFL draft Friday night.
For the Texans, the pick almost certainly signals the end of the Deshaun Watson era in Houston. Why else would you use the first pick of your draft to take a quarterback? What stinks for the Texans is they were unwilling and then unable to deal Watson to pick up more selections in the draft or future drafts.
Such is life.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the selection of Mills in the third round.
Dear Davis Mills,
Keep your package to yourself. That’s all we ask.
Sincerely,@HoustonTexans

Imagine its your 24th anniversary and your husband drags you to Cleveland in the middle of April during a pandemic to stand outside and watch your team take Davis Mills

The pick of Mills didn’t seem as bad as some imagined:
So alot of Texans fans were unhappy with this Davis Mills pick but the crew on NFL Network's post-draft show was unanimous in praising the pick….🤔

What is almost a no-brainer is that Mills will see time for Houston in 2021 because either Watson is leaving town or will be suspended.
Davis Mills is going to get to play at some point for the #Texans this year.
Watson is likely getting suspended / won’t play again in Houston and they’ll want to evaluate Mills before drafting another QB in the top 5 next year.

Davis Mills will be starting in Houston this season.

CBS Sports’ Will Brinson acknowledged that Mills’ pick does impact Watson’s future, but also noted teams take second or third-round quarterbacks frequently:
Davis Mills picked by Houston is a big deal. Impacts Deshaun Watson's future in a big way. But he wasn't a first-round pick. People snag second/third-round QBs all the time. Kind of interesting to see NFL-run network emphasize it as much as NFLN has tonight.

One connection that is overlooked is how the Texans’ quarterbacks coach, Pep Hamilton, was the receivers coach in 2010 when David Shaw, Stanford’s coach, was the offensive coordinator and running backs coach. Certainly the two coaches may have talked this offseason about Mills.
Pep Hamilton was Stanford’s WR coach while David Shaw was the OC/RB coach (2010). Pep was promoted to OC/QB (2011-12) when Shaw took Stanford’s HC job. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pep played a role in #Texans drafting Davis Mills with his past collegiate connections there.

Hey, Dan Orlovsky, who knows no boundaries, liked Mills:
My 3 favorite guys I wanna see go tonight

Mills’ high school alma mater was proud to see him go to the Texans:
Congrats to 2017 alumnus Davis Mills (@Millsions) on making his dreams come true! Mills was selected by the Houston Texans tonight in the NFL draft Always a Spartan! https://t.co/u3bCL5X55C

The drafting of Mills is just more proof that the NFL draft brings its own drama.
