Elijah Moore was one of the most explosive wide receivers in college football last season, often producing chunk plays after the catch and making defenders look silly in space.
Now, he’ll have the chance to take his explosiveness to a new level working with fellow rookie Zach Wilson.
The Jets continued to build around Wilson on Friday night, selecting Moore with the No. 34 pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. Shortly after hearing his name called by former New York star Laveranues Coles, Moore spokes with reporters and wasted no time expressing his excitement over the opportunity to team up with Wilson.
“He’s got a great arm,” Moore said, per SNY. “I’m ready to catch a lot of touchdowns.”
Moore was on the receiving end of 16 touchdown passes during his three years at Ole Miss, including eight operating in Lane Kiffin’s spread offense as a junior. With Kiffin calling the plays, Ole Miss made a concerted effort to get Moore the ball in situations where he could make plays after the catch. It paid dividends, as he registered 1,193 receiving yards and an eye-popping 149.1 receiving yards per game.
“I turn into a running back,” Moore said. “I played running back my whole life, so really, after the catch is what I do. I’m more than comfortable doing any of that.”
Mike LaFleur’s offense is predicated on play-action passes and allowing receivers to make plays on underneath and intermediate routes, which caters to Moore’s skill set. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound receiver has the ability to make plays in the slot or out wide. He caught 64 of his 86 of passes out of the slot in 2020, but he insists he can do it all.
“I play receiver, he said, per ESPN. “Wherever you need me, I’m gonna get the job done. People are going to say slot, people are going to say wideout. Call me what you want, I’m gonna get the job done.”
