Penn State’s secondary may be one of the strongest collective units on the football roster this season, but one member of that unit is looking to move on from the Nittany Lions. Joseph Johnson announced he has entered the transfer portal and will begin evaluating his options before continuing his football career.
Johnson was a member of Penn State’s Class of 2020, a three-star prospect. He did not play for the Nittany Lions in 2020. Johnson is a Richmond, Virginia native, and we will wait to see just where Johnson may continue his journey.
Johnson was the No. 29 cornerback in the nation in the Class of 2020 with some potential to be a solid player. But a log jam on the depth chart in the secondary has made it difficult to crack into the mix. Whether or not a desire for playing time is the ultimate reason for the potential change of scenery is unknown, but it would certainly make sense.

Penn State’s situation in the secondary looks pretty solid. Tariq Castro-Fields returns as a starter at one cornerback spot, and Joey Poter Jr. and Kalen King could see action on the other side. Jaquan Brisker returns to start at safety, and Jonathan Sutherland could be leading candidate for the other starting job up for grabs. The secondary is also so crowded that Penn State is working on potentially sliding one player to the offensive side of the football.
