Veteran guard Sterling Brown was the victim of an assault on Sunday night, the Houston Rockets announced. He suffered facial lacerations in the incident, but is expected to make a full recovery.

While Brown did not in Monday night’s game in Miami, the team noted that his absence was due to unrelated soreness in his left knee, which has forced Brown to miss the team’s last five games.

Here’s what the team said in its statement, which did not clarify whether Brown was with the team in Orlando:

Last night, Sterling Brown was the victim of an assault. He had no prior knowledge of or interaction with the assailants. He suffered facial lacerations but will make a full recovery. Sterling is not playing tonight because of his prior knee injury.

A 6-foot-5 guard, Brown has become one of Houston’s best perimeter defenders and shooters this season. In 24.1 minutes per game, Brown is averaging 8.2 points (42.3% on 3-pointers) and 4.4 rebounds.

The 26-year-old is not yet under contract with the Rockets beyond this season, but he’s young enough that he could be a part of their plans.
