Josh Heupel’s offense: Finding grass, attacking grass, claiming grass

Josh Heupel is in the process of installing his offense at Tennessee during spring practices.

The first-year Tennessee head coach is one of college football’s most innovative offensive minds.

Heupel has experienced success with various Air Raid and veer and shoot concepts throughout his offenses.

He was hired as Tennessee’s head coach on Jan. 27 after serving in the same capacity at UCF from 2018-20.

Before being hired at Tennessee, Heupel signed outside linebacker Kadeem Leonard to UCF’s 2021 recruiting class. Leonard played for head coach George Coltharp at Fairmont High School in Fairmont, North Carolina.

Coltharp is also the CEO of 92 Mesh Group.

He joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” to discuss Heupel’s offense.

“The thing about the Air Raid is this, it is very simple,” Coltharp said. “You find grass, you attack grass, you claim grass, you throw it. I think that Josh really understands that philosophy.

“He is going to get guys in at Tennessee that can do those things at a high level, and it is not really that difficult. Play fast, do simple things and do the same thing over and over. Really and truly, the days of having a 200-page playbook in football are not as important. All of the Air Raid guys have embraced that — they just do the same things over and over.”

The entire show with Coltharp can be listened to here or below.
