Florida’s passing offense in 2020 was arguably the best in school history, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that its 10-year drought of having an offensive skill position player selected in the first round is expected to come to an end. In the latest mock draft from ESPN analyst Todd McShay, he has Kyle Pitts becoming the highest-drafted tight end in 51 years, while quarterback Kyle Trask reunites with receiver Kadarius Toney in the NFC North.
Though some predict that Atlanta will use its fourth pick to select a franchise quarterback to replace Matt Ryan (or trade down), but McShay has them pulling the trigger on one of the most intriguing college prospects in years in Pitts.
Man, this one was tough. Do the Falcons take advantage of the opportunity to take their QB of the future while they have the high pick, or do they turn their attention to the elite offensive playmakers available? QB Trey Lance (North Dakota State) could be the pick, with the chance to learn behind Matt Ryan, but frankly Pitts is just too difficult to pass on. He is a unique talent and a mismatch for any opponent. His 6-foot-6 size, speed and hands would cause fits for defensive coordinators, especially when they already have to account for Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley.
Pitts may not be a need for the Falcons, but he would improve any roster he landed on tremendously. If this happened, Pitts would be the highest tight end drafted since Billy Cannon in 1960 (and the second-highest ever).
