Drew Brees pens retirement letter, shares touching advice for ‘all the Young Dreamers’

“What I’ve found to be most meaningful in life are relationships.”

After New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced he was retiring, he published a lengthy piece of reflection in the The Advocate and Times-Picayune about his career and all that he’s learned.

He thanked his family, his fans, his coaches, his teammates and just about everyone that lived in his orbit during his 20-year NFL career, which will doubtlessly land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Brees spent five years with the then-San Diego Chargers, but this note had little reference to that stint in his career. It was all about his 15 years in New Orleans.

There was a particularly sweet section he wrote, which was directed “To all the Young Dreamers.” Here’s what he said, via NOLA.com.

My heart and mind ring with the lessons and teachings of so many in my life. My journey has included many failures, plenty of adversity, and moments of tragedy and triumph. Through it all, I’ve learned some valuable lessons.

1. Always possess a growth mindset!

No matter your circumstances, no matter what adversity you may face, this is an opportunity to grow. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. Failure is a tough teacher, but it is the source of all achievement. Always get back up, and stay the course.

2. The Power of Play

When you’re part of a team, you’ll learn more life lessons, social skills, and develop more confidence and self-esteem than anything else you can do. The point is not to choose the easy route, but rather to challenge yourself, and not be afraid to fail. As you work through that adversity, you are molded and strengthened into who you are meant to be. You will be amazed at how good you feel once you make the commitment to just try. Play as many sports as you can for as long as you can, and while you are playing remember a few simple things…do your best, have fun, and never quit!

3. Focus on Winning at the Game of Life

We all strive to be great at something. It could be sports, music, etc. What I’ve found to be most meaningful in life are relationships, being part of a team, feeling empowered by knowledge and education, and feeling that I can impact the world in a positive way. Find the things that bring out the best in you and others. Have a thirst for knowledge, treat others with respect and kindness, work to be well rounded, and do your best where you are. It may not be where you want to be yet, but when you focus on winning the game of life, the rest will take care of itself.

It’s a sweet and thoughtful message. You can read the entire thing here.
