Sophomore right fielder Jordan Beck helped No. 14 Tennessee defeat UNC Greensboro, 6-2, Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Beck doubled and drove in three runs against the Spartans.
He started Tennessee’s scoring with a two-run double that plated Jake Rucker and Pete Derkay to give the Vols (12-3) a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Tennessee extended its advantage to 3-0 when Connor Pavolony singled home Max Ferguson, who had a solid performance with two hits (including a double and a home run). He scored two runs and had an RBI against the Spartans (10-3).
UNC Greensboro scored both of its runs in the sixth as Corey Rosier and Pres Cavenaugh each homered in the frame to pull the Spartans to within 3-2.
Ferguson answered with his round-tripper in the seventh inning, and Beck knocked in a run during the eighth with a sacrifice fly.
Evan Russell’s RBI fielder’s choice closed UT’s scoring later in the frame.
Vols’ pitcher Chad Dallas started and went 5.1 innings. He surrender one run, one hit, two walks, while striking out three as he improved to 2-0 this season.
Sean Hunley threw two innings and gave up one run, one hit and one walk, while fanning three.
Kirby Conell did not retire a batter in his stint on the hill, but Redmond Walsh picked up his third save in 2021.
He went 1.2 innings and yielded a hit, but recorded all five of the Spartans’ outs via strikeout.
