Report: Patriots weren’t in the mix for a Carson Wentz trade

Not surprising.

The New England Patriots weren’t interested in quarterback Carson Wentz, according to NFL Network’s Michael Giardi. The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms on a trade sending Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, per reports from ESPN and NFL Network. New England wasn’t in the mix.

The Colts got Wentz in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-rounder, which becomes a first, if Wentz plays 75+% of snaps and Indy makes the playoffs. Combine that cost with Wentz’s salary, roughly $25 for each of the next four years, and it seems like coach and general manager Bill Belichick was happy to look for a different option.

In 2020, the Patriots had quarterback Cam Newton at starting quarterback. He replaced Tom Brady, the team’s quarterback for two decades. Newton played on a one-year deal, and his future with the team is uncertain.

New England has just quarterback Jarrett Stidham on the roster for 2021. They’ll surely add at least one more option, likely a starting-caliber quarterback. The Patriots may even add a few options, whether through the trade market, in free agency or in the draft.
