The Steelers are looking at the Ben Roethlisberger contract situation as a business just like they should.

Never forget the NFL is a business. It’s just business is the mantra of players and owners when it comes to contracts and player moves. I’m not saying there is trouble brewing with the Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger but it definitely sounds like the team is looking at what is in its best interest when it comes to Roethlisberger and his contract.

According to ESPN reporter Brooke Pryor, Roethlisberger met with head coach Mike Tomlin, general manager Kevin Colbert and team president Art Rooney II and reiterated the point that he still wants to play football.

But according to Colbert, it isn’t that simple. Roethlisberger is a $41 million cap hit in 2021 and there is zero chance he is on the roster with that contract. Pittsburgh has very few options when it comes to reducing that number, some of which involve Big Ben not being on the team in 2021.

Hopefully the two sides can come together on an agreement that works for the franchise and keeps Roethlisberger on the team. No one wants to see Roethlisberger playing somewhere else in 2021 but at the same time, it will be nearly impossible to field a competitive team with him with that bloated contract.
