The Chicago Bears have plenty of positional needs they need to address heading free agency, but there seems to be one position that ranks above all the rest.
Bleacher Report examined every team’s biggest need heading into free agency next month, and it’s no surprise that they have quarterback listed for the Bears.
If Chicago selects a quarterback in the draft, that player may need a season or two to develop, which is why Pace should pursue a veteran via trade or free agency.
In the event that the Bears don’t land Carson Wentz, who could be on the move “in the coming days,” per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the front office should consider experienced options such as Andy Dalton and Cam Newton.
While Mitchell Trubisky played his best ball at the end of last season, it’s not likely he’ll return to Chicago. Perhaps it’s best for both sides to move on. But that leaves Nick Foles as the only quarterback under contract in 2021, which means the Bears will look to add a quarterback through either free agency, the NFL draft or via trade.
The Bears have been wasting no time trying to find an answer to the franchise’s everlasting quarterback woes. They’ve reportedly reached out about Deshaun Watson, Matthew Stafford (before he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams) and Carson Wentz. Whether the Bears end up landing a quarterback on the trade market, like a Watson or Wentz, remains to be seen. But they’re certainly big players in the quarterback market so far this offseason.
While B/R notes that Pace and Nagy need a quarterback that can play now, they could also buy themselves more time with a top-tier quarterback prospect. Then again, the Bears aren’t currently in a position to nab one of those quarterbacks in the NFL draft. But we all know Pace has a habit of seeing what he wants to doing anything to get it, including trading future draft capital.
