Saturday afternoon, defensive back Chester Kimbrough decided to transfer from Florida to Michigan State in order to continue pursuing his football career with the Spartans. The former Gator decided to enter the transfer portal shortly before Christmas. There was always a chance that he’d return to the Swamp in orange and blue, but that was evidently not in the cards.
“I plan to take my talents to Michigan State. They got a lot of good talent over there, ” said Kimbrough, explaining his choice. “They produce a lot of DB’s – lotta athletes, period – and I like competition. So you know what I’m saying? Michigan State is where it’s at.”

The former three-star recruit has three years of eligibility left as he joins Mel Tucker’s beleaguered Spartans. His new program wasn’t especially successful in 2020, finishing the season with a B1G East worst 2-5 record. However, Kimbrough will be facing a better outlook for playing time, as he was likely to be leapfrogged in the Gators’ pecking order by incoming 5-star freshman Jason Marshall Jr.
Despite the fact that he wasn’t afforded much playing time in his two seasons with the Gators, it’s somewhat surprising that Kimbrough isn’t going to a more high-profile destination. He was offered scholarships out of high school by a number of top-flight athletic programs, including Alabama and LSU, among others. Perhaps he has his sights set on proving how good he can be on game day and was assured his chance in East Lansing.
Regardless of what his reasons may have been, we here at Gators Wire wish Kimbrough only the best in his athletic journey.
