There wouldn’t be a more ideal situation for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots then signing Dak Prescott.
It’s a complicated idea because it’s hard to believe the Dallas Cowboys would let the 27-year-old walk away, but crazier things have happened. Dallas reportedly plans to sign Prescott long-term or place the franchise tag on him for the second time. Until that happens, he’s a free agent and will be the most appealing player available on the board.
The Patriots absolutely need an elite quarterback to move their operation forward in a positive way. Without a top tier signal-caller, it’ll be extremely difficult for Belichick to lure in top-notch offensive talent. Everything will start at quarterback and build around that. It’s hard to believe the Patriots bring back Cam Newton, so where does that put them?
Given Belichick’s age at 68, it’s difficult to imagine he drafts a rookie with the No. 15 pick. He could even trade for a veteran or sign a free agent, which makes the Prescott scenario intriguing.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith strongly disagrees with a potential landing of Prescott in New England and he elaborated on that during “First Take” on Thursday.
“Have we not gotten to a point — now that Tom Brady has won his seventh championship — who really wants to succeed Tom Brady in Foxboro?” Smith said, transcribed by NESN. “I mean, who really wants that task? Who wants that responsibility? Because no matter what you do, anything short of a championship is not going to measure up to those folks there, as well as it shouldn’t. I mean, they’ve been spoiled over the last two decades with the level of excellence he’s been able to put forth. Obviously, in concert with Bill Belichick to some degree. But as we’ve learned, give Tom Brady some weapons and look at what he’ll do. Bill Belichick didn’t do that. That’s problematic.
“So when I look at it from that perspective, I say no. The Patriots do not make sense for me right now. Let Bill Belichick — the GM, not the coach, because he has nothing to prove as a head coach — go out there and prove that what he can do is go about the business of surrounding the quarterback with the requisite weapons needed in order to be competitive. Particularly with the Buffalo Bills on the come-up, the Miami Dolphins on the come-up. I look at it from that perspective and I say no way Dak Prescott should end up in New England.”
Maybe he’s right, but there’s a very strong chance that Prescott could create his own lane and join a franchise that’s adept to winning. Prescott had a gruesome injury that ended his 2020 season, but he’s recovering well and should be ready for the start of 2021.
The Patriots need a quarterback and should go after Prescott with all resources if they get the chance.
