If you compare the expectations of 2020 with the results, the Pittsburgh Steelers were a failure. To go from 11-0 to a late-season collapse was remarkable and almost impossible to wrap your head around. But as much as we want to break down the failings on a micro-level it all comes back to head coach Mike Tomlin.
It is hard to believe this is a franchise that went to the Super Bowl twice in three years under Tomlin. But since that Super Bowl loss in 2010, Pittsburgh has struggled to make any headway in the playoffs. Year after year there are excuses but the one common thread has been Tomlin and the Rooney’s unending loyalty.
After what happened at the end of 2020, can the franchise continue to work with excuses and just being competitive? Pittsburgh is on the verge of a re-build when Ben Roethlisberger retires which might buy Tomlin many more seasons of mediocrity.
