The Philadelphia 76ers acquired Seth Curry on draft night back in November due to the fact that he can light it up from deep. To begin the season, he fulfilled that promise as he shot a blistering 59.5% from deep and he was having a terrific start.
Then, he tested positive for COVID on Jan. 7 which forced him to miss two weeks of the season and that has affected his energy and his rhythm. Since returning to the lineup, he is shooting only 29.2% from deep over six games.
He went 0-for-2 from deep against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday and he went scoreless with four fouls.
“I’m not worried about guys,” said coach Doc Rivers. “It’s a long season. Tobias (Harris), the first three games, everybody thought he forgot how to play. Shake’s (Milton) had his moments. We have so many other options that I think guys just get it going organically. I don’t think you should ever force guys to get it going.”
Rivers is correct about Harris. Fans were ready to give up on him after the early season struggles and now he is in the running to be an All-Star this season.
Besides, if Curry doesn’t have it going, then the Sixers can turn to both Harris and Danny Green who are both shooting well from deep. Another factor to consider is that Curry has the reputation of a shooter that still makes defenders pay attention to him.
“Even though Seth didn’t shoot well, he was plus-18 on the floor,” said Green. “We know that regardless of whether or not some guys are shooting well or not, we’re going to have other people that can score for us. Guys can still bring other things to the table.”
Everybody knew Curry was not going to shoot 59.5% from dep throughout the whole season. As a shooter, there will be peaks and valleys. The important part is they are winning games and they will be able to stay afloat until he can find his groove again.
“Seth is still trying to come back from the virus and he missed a lot of stuff,” said Rivers. “I’m patient and not that concerned by it if you want me to be honest. I like how we’re playing. I look at his minutes on the floor, he had zero attempts at halftime, but we had 64 points and we shoot 55%. There’s going to be nights like that and that doesn’t concern me much at all.”
