Free-agent-to-be edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney is reportedly open to returning to the Tennessee Titans in 2021.
The news comes from Terry McCormick of Titan Insider, who is told that Clowney is “definitely open” to a reunion with Tennessee after a lackluster first season with the team in 2020.
The door might still be open for Jadeveon Clowney to return to the Tennessee Titans.
A league source with knowledge of the situation indicated that Clowney is “definitely open” to a return to Tennessee in 2021.
The Titans signed Clowney to a one-year deal worth nearly $13 million last September.
Unfortunately, he didn’t make the impact the team was expecting. The former No. 1 overall pick failed to record a single sack in eight games, and his season ended early following knee surgery.
As we’ve stated before, the Titans should be open to bringing Clowney back, but only under two conditions:
1. Clowney gets paid far less than he did in 2020. Spotrac has estimated his market value at $6.5 million on a one-year deal, which is doable. Anything more than that won’t be logical, especially with the Titans having limited funds.
2. Clowney is part of but not the centerpiece of Tennessee’s attempt to improve its putrid pass rush. General manager Jon Robinson must be able to make a bigger move on top of bringing back the South Carolina product if that’s what he chooses to do.
If those two conditions can be met, it would definitely make sense. However, if re-signing Clowney inhibits Tennessee from making a bigger move, the Titans shouldn’t do it.
