Recently retired Raiders TE Jason Witten takes head coaching job at Liberty Christian

Two weeks ago, Jason Witten officially retired from the NFL after becoming the NFL’s all-time leader in games played among tight ends. He was able to get that record by signing on with the Raiders for a single season where he was seen as more of a mentor than anything.

That role seems to fit Witten pretty well now. And he didn’t take long to take that to the coaching ranks. Argyle Liberty Christian prep school has officially announced Witten as their new head coach.

Liberty Christian is located in the Dallas Fort Worth area where Witten spent the first 16 years of his NFL career and where he signed a one-day contract to officially retire as a Cowboy.

If you listened to Witten speak just prior to the season finale, you could hear him hinting at taking this job.

“I’ve had some legendary coaches that have impacted my life,” said Witten adding that he had thought about getting into coaching. “From an early age on the football field. From my grandfather, my college coach, to Bill Parcells, to Jason Garrett and some amazing position coaches and of course my time here with Jon [Gruden].”

This is a different path than Witten had taken when he initially retired after the 2017 season. He went into television for a year, before coming out of retirement and playing another two seasons; one with the Cowboys and one with the Raiders.
