What’s next for Drew Brees? Reports have suggested he’s preparing to hang up his cleats after one of the greatest careers in NFL history, but the New Orleans Saints quarterback hasn’t shared whether he’s ready to retire or not just yet.
Someone who would know what he’s considering is Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. He was asked where things stand with Brees at this juncture, but he made it clear that the ball is in Brees’ hands.
“I don’t think it’s a lot different from last year,” Loomis said in a Wednesday media conference call. “We’ll wait for him.”
Brees didn’t make a public decision until Feb. 18 last year, taking about three weeks after the Pro Bowl to mull his options and talk it out with his family before choosing to return for the 2020 season. He’s under contract through 2021 with one of the NFL’s highest salary cap hits, but can choose to retire and help the Saints with their bookkeeping along the way. He could also opt to come back and see his contract through, one last time.
Whatever decision he makes, the Saints won’t rush him into it. He’s earned that. But with a hectic offseason ahead of them and many tough decisions of their own to make, not just those surrounding No. 9, this is one issue Loomis and his team would probably like to get settled one way or another, sooner rather than later.
