The Philadelphia 76ers acquired Seth Curry primarily because he is one of the better sharpshooters in the history of the game. He was off to a terrific start from deep on the season, shooting close to 60% from deep, but on Saturday, that was not the case.
Curry went 0-for-3 from deep in Saturday’s win over the Detroit Pistons, but he managed to come up with 14 points as he became a factor in other areas. He got to the basket, he knocked down pull-up jumpers and he got to the line.
“It’s one thing we said in camp — and I already knew it — I saw him in the playoffs,” said coach Doc Rivers. “Seth is so much more than a 3-point shooter. He’s really terrific in pick-and-roll and coming off of picks making plays. We know that.”
Curry has always wanted to show people he can do more than just shoot it from deep. He is doing that lately and the fact he can shoot it from deep makes it easier for him to put the ball on the floor. Once a defender comes at him with an aggressive closeout, he can put the ball on the floor and get to the basket that way.
“The fact that he has that cannon makes him an even better pick-and-roll player because they’re so up and alert with him coming off,” Rivers added. “It opens up other things.”
Curry’s presence has added layers to Philadelphia’s offense and it has made it easier for guys like Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid to operate. The fact that there are multiple ball-handlers within this offense is a big help to the offense.
