The AFC Championship Game could prove to be an important step in Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy’s quest to become an NFL head coach.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy has already begun to assemble a coaching staff in the event that he’s hired to fill the Houston Texans’ head-coaching vacancy. The Texans are expected to request a second interview with Bieniemy, indicating that he’ll be among the finalists in their head-coaching search.
On the opposing sideline in the AFC title games is Bill DC and former Minnesota Vikings HC Leslie Frazier. He’s also interviewed for the vacancy in Houston and has begun assembling a coaching staff in the event that he’ll be hired.

Suddenly, the stakes are a bit higher for both Frazier and Bieniemy in the AFC title game. Schefter notes that the winning coordinator could be the loser in the Texans’ search because Houston would have to wait until after the Super Bowl to hire him. To me, it seems like they’d have all the more reason to be interested in the winning coordinator in a head-to-head matchup between the two.
If Bieniemy does lose out on the Texans’ job while earning another trip to the Super Bowl, you won’t see him or many Chiefs fans complaining. However, you’ll likely see a lot of frustration as it relates to the timing of the NFL’s head-coaching searches and hiring rules.
