Ex-Lions GM Martin Mayhew will be the new GM for the Washington Football Team

Mayhew breaks a long string of ex-Lions GM who never got hired in that role again

Former Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is set to become the new GM of the Washington Football Team. Several reports confirm that Mayhew will take over the vacant role in Washington, working with head coach Ron Rivera and team president Jason Wright.

When he is officially hired, a move expected on Friday, Mayhew will be the first person who has been a Lions GM to get a chance to run another NFL team in the same capacity.

Mayhew ran the football side of the Lions for the 2009 through 2015 seasons, though he initially took over for the fired Matt Millen during the winless 2008 campaign. His Lions produced a record of 47-65 in his tenure, making the postseason twice. He was fired during the 2015 season.

Since leaving Detroit, Mayhew spent one season as the director of football operations for the New York Giants and then three with the San Francisco 49ers in various front office capacities. He was also the director of football administration for the XFL.

Mayhew played the bulk of his NFL career in Washington as a cornerback. He was a starter for the Washington team that won a Super Bowl after the 1991 season.
