After a year off football, former Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks is back into coaching. According to Yahoo Sports, he has been hired as defensive coordinator at Missouri in the college ranks.
He was recently among the three favorites to land the job.
Wilks has not coached in college since 2005. From 2006-2019, he worked his way up the ranks in the NFL, becoming the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. He was fired after one season, going 3-13, and then was defensive coordinator for one year for the Cleveland Browns before he was let go with head coach Freddie Kitchens and his staff.
Wilks was highly respected in the NFL and has the personality and work ethic to thrive in the college ranks. He will likely be a good recruiter and he does know defense.
He takes over at Missouri for Ryan Walters, who left to be DC at Illinois. The Tigers allowed 32.3 points per game in 2020, ranking 85th in the country in defense.
