Now that most of the new coaching staff hires are set in stone for the Longhorns, let’s take a look forward to the potential starters next season.
With Sam Ehlinger departing to the NFL, the primary position to watch is the quarterback battle. This is Steve Sarkisian’s specialty. He’s turned a multitude of passers into NFL-caliber quarterbacks including Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez, Jake Locker, Tua Tagovailoa, and Mac Jones.
Casey Thompson gave us a glimpse of what he’s capable of accomplishing when he filled in for Ehlinger in the Alamo Bowl against Colorado. It’s expected to be a close battle with Hudson Card, but I would give Thompson the slight edge as of this moment.
There’s plenty of movement on this depth chart due to the amount of players who are leaving the program through the NFL Draft, transfer portal, or graduating. There’s also a few unknowns on the offensive side of the ball with a new head coach now in control, but let’s try and piece together what the offense could look like in 2021.
