The Alabama men’s basketball team is off to one of the best starts in recent school history. The Crimson Tide are 10-3 on the season with a 6-0 mark in SEC play to lead the league.
A reason for that success is a balanced offensive attack, led by four players averaging in double figures. One of those players is senior guard John Petty.
The 6-foot-5 senior from Huntsville, Alabama, is averaging 13.5 points per game for the Tide in 2020-21. Petty is one of the top three-point shooters in all of college basketball, and in Saturday’s win over Arkansas, he became the school’s all-time leader in three-pointers made.
Petty needed four threes to become Alabama’s career leader and ended making five from beyond the arc. The previous record was held by Brian Williams, who played for the Crimson Tide from 1996-99.
After the game, Petty reflected on the record, per Charlie Potter of 247Sports.
“It means a lot to me,” Petty said.
“But it’s also gonna be fun to celebrate with my teammates because, without them, I wouldn’t be in this position without getting great shots from them, without them doing their thing of attracting people and then kicking it out to me.”

It’s a major accomplishment for Petty. However, he and his teammates have their sights set on something far bigger this season in a wide-open SEC.
Alabama is back on the court Tuesday with a trip to Baton Rouge to face second-place LSU.
