The Longhorns baseball season was cut short last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Texas was off to 14-3 start that included 10 wins at home through 17 games. Just prior to the Longhorns opening Big 12 play against Oklahoma on March 20 in Norman, the season was canceled. Fortunately, most of the players from the 2020 campaign are returning in 2021 minus pitcher Bryce Elder who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves.
Center fielder Duke Ellis and pitcher Kam Fields also left the team. Ellis was signed by the Chicago White Sox, and Fields entered the transfer portal. The top players returning will be Ty Madden, Zach Zubia and Austin Todd. Head coach David Pierce’s squad will certainly be one to keep an eye on.
According to Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball, the head coaches of the conference have agreed to a season schedule that will have 32 conference games. Nonconference scheduling will be up to the discretion of the schools, according to his tweet on Thursday.
BREAKING: @Big12Conference head coaches agreed to a season structure that would include 32 conference games (up from 24) with four-game series on the weekend. Non-conference up to institutions but midweek timing TBD. #Big12 ADs expected to vote on this next Tuesday. Stay tuned.
