The Indianapolis Colts are preparing for their playoff matchup with the Buffalo Bills this week but other teams have put defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus on their list of candidates to fill their head coach vacancy.
With three teams (Jets, Texans, Chargers) filing requests to interview Eberflus after wild-card weekend, it is likely that the third-year defensive coordinator will be a busy man this offseason.
If and when Eberflus decides to take on a job, head coach Frank Reich said this week that he would fully support the former in that new role.
“Flus (Matt Eberflus) is a great coach. He’d be a great head coach, but to be honest I’m not thinking much about that right now. We’re thinking about the Bills,” Reich said Monday. “We have a short week. I’m happy for him at any opportunities he gets. I would fully endorse and support anyone who ever called and asked me about Flus as a man, as a leader and as a coach. He is a worthy candidate. Obviously, I don’t want to lose him. We are focused on the Bills, but happy for him and support for him.”
It remains to be seen what Eberflus will do this offseason. His defense has become widely known as one that gives maximum effort all the time, which can’t be said for a majority of teams in the league.
While the defense has its moments of inconsistency, Eberflus’ ability to get the players to buy in quickly should bode well for him whenever he does take on a head coaching role.
How quickly that will be is the question he faces this offseason, but he will have the support of his current head coach in Reich.
