One intriguing name that has come up in the Houston Texans’ search for a new coach is Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady.
The 31-year-old worked with former Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who helped Carolina finish 5-11 with the former Pro Bowler starting 15 games.
If Brady was able to have moderate success with Bridgewater, getting the team to finish tied for 12th in net yards per pass attempt at 6.6, what would he be able to do with Deshaun Watson, who led Houston to a league-leading 7.6 yards per pass attempt and won the NFL passing title with 4,823 passing yards?
According to Tim Weaver of the Panthers Wire, Watson came in at No. 3 in the ranking of quarterbacks better than Bridgewater. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was No. 1 and Green Bay Packers signal caller Aaron Rodgers was No. 2.
Bridgewater finished completing 340 passes on 492 attempts for 3,733 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 92.1 passer rating. Watson closed out a full 16-game campaign going 382-of-544 for 4,823 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 112.4 passer rating.
The big question mark regarding Brady is his lack of experience as a head football coach. Following his graduation from William & Mary in 2012, Brady has had either position coach jobs or coordinator gigs. Can a guy who isn’t old enough to run for President of the United States have enough experience to lead an entire NFL team, not just one side of the ball?
