49ers sign 13 players to Reserve/Futures contracts

The San Francisco 49ers added 13 players to their roster on futures contracts as they begin gearing up for the 2021 season.

The San Francisco 49ers on Monday announced the signing of 13 players to Reserve/Futures contracts.

A Reserve/Futures contract means a player, provided they stay with the club through the entire offseason, will be on the 90-man roster and have a chance to compete for a spot on the active roster.

The list of 13 players signed by the 49ers included 10 who finished the season on the club’s practice squad. Here’s the full list:

CB Adonis Alexander
DL Josiah Coatney
S Chris Edwards
LB Jonas Griffith
DL Daeshon Hall
CB Tim Harris Jr.
FB Josh Hokit
WR Jauan Jennings
S Obi Melifonwu
WR Austin Proehl
OL Dakoda Shepley
WR Kevin White
OL Isaiah Williams

Alexander, Melifonwu and Proehl were the three who weren’t with the 49ers to end the 2020 season.

Alexander was a sixth-round pick by Washington in the 2018 supplemental draft. He played in nine games and registered four tackles as a rookie. The Rams picked up Alexander last offseason before cutting him in before the regular season began.

Melifonwu became a hot prospect in the 2017 draft after lighting up the combine. The UConn product wound up going in the second round, No. 56 overall, to the Raiders. He struggled in his rookie campaign though and played only five games. He suited up for two games with the Patriots in 2018, and New England waived him in April of last year.

Proehl was a seventh-round pick of the Bills in 2018, but spent most of his season on the Rams’ practice squad. He was released by Buffalo as part of final roster cuts and added to the Titans practice squad for a day before making his way to the Rams’ practice squad. Los Angeles cut him in April of 2019.
