Matt Prater wins Detroit free beer by winning a kicking bet

Prater beat out Denver’s Brandon Mcmanus

Matt Prater’s big leg paid off for the city of Detroit in more ways than one. The Lions kicker won residents a free Bud Light thanks to his ability to make long field goals.

Prater and Broncos kicker Brandon McManus made a wager over the summer, sponsored by Bud Light, that the man who made the longest field goal in the 2020 season would win a free beer for his city.

Prater made a 59-yard kick during the season, a memorable long-distance bomb that won the game for the Lions over the Football Team. That edged out McManus, who hit a 58-yarder for the Broncos.

McManus made more kicks (10 to six) from 50-plus yards, but Prater had the longest. The longtime Lions kicker set the NFL record for the most successful attempts from beyond 50 yards on Sunday, breaking Sebastian Janikowski’s record with his 59th career make of 50 or more yards. He finished 6-for-10 from beyond 50 in 2020.
