Injury Report: Alex Smith limited, Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson DNP

Alex Smith took some steps forward in practice on Thursday, while both Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson remain hampered by injury.

There was some significant progress from QB Alex Smith on Thursday afternoon, but we are still in the dark when it comes to his availability on Sunday night in a win-or-go-home against the Philadelphia Eagles. For the first time in a couple of weeks, Smith went through stretching drills with the team and later took first-team reps at QB in team drills, which is a major step up from his DNP on Wednesday. We will see how his calf feels on Friday, but it could potentially be a tough decision for coach Ron Rivera to make this weekend.

Elsewhere on the field, WR Terry McLaurin was once again confined to the side field where he worked with trainers and attempted to rehab a high-ankle sprain that has plagued him for several weeks now. McLaurin missed last week’s game against the Carolina Panthers, and it seems that he could be in major jeopardy of missing the regular-season finale as well.

RB Antonio Gibson was also absent from practice on Thursday, which was the second-straight day that he missed this week. This comes as a bit of a surprise, considering he played on a turf toe injury on Sunday and looked good, and the feeling was that he should be good to go in Week 17. However, if he continues to miss again on Friday, there could be some serious doubt for his availability as well.
