The San Francisco 49ers have lost their last three contests and six of their last seven after an ugly Week 15 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys. Their time floating near the middle of the NFL Wire power rankings has passed. The 41-33 loss to Dallas dropped San Francisco three spots to No. 24, and there’s no end to their dip in sight.
There was some hope after their Week 12 win over the Rams that kept them in the middle of the pack that a climb was coming. All they needed to do was put up a fight against the Bills before beating Washington and Dallas. They got crushed by Buffalo and lost close games to the two NFC East clubs.
Excuses no longer exist for the 49ers to keep them in the top 20 of the power rankings. They’re not one of the 20 best teams in the NFL with the personnel they’re rolling out on a weekly basis. The fact they were competitive enough to even have a chance is something of an accomplishment. But in the win-loss vacuum of weekly power rankings, the 49ers are among the worst teams in the NFL, and it’s hard to see that turning around at any point in the next two weeks to push them any higher than the No. 24 spot, and another dip could be coming.
