New Philadelphia 76ers guard Seth Curry has a lot of responsibility on him for the 2020-21 season. As the regular season gets set to begin on Wednesday, he has to be able to provide the spacing necessary for Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid to operate, sort of how a former shooter did so.
When JJ Redick was in Philadelphia, he was the sniper the team needed from deep. He was a guy that opposing defenses had to worry about on a nightly basis due to the fact that he is one of the top shooters in league history, but he also had a good on-court relationship with Embiid.
That type of relationship is something Embiid would like to have again with Curry and that is why the new shooting guard watched some film on how the two of them ran their two-man game.
“Yeah, we looked at some things on film and we worked on it in practice,” said Curry on Monday. “I’m a different player than JJ so I’m not going to do it in the same sense, but I think that first preseason game we had a little stretch there where we played a lot of pick and roll, me and Joel and got some good stuff off of it.”
This is true. Embiid and Curry were able to work on a couple of dribble hand-offs like Redick ran with the big fella during their time together and he some easy buckets off of it. The hope is that over time, he will be able to have similar success with the Sixers as Redick did.
“They use a little bit more pick-and-roll than the system I was in last when I had the ball but, the dribble hand-off is not too different,” Curry added. “The more I do it and work on it, the more I learned the place that Joel likes to be at, then I get better and our offense looks better in the half-court.”
The Sixers still need some more time in order to become efficient in the half-court offense, but that is understandable considering that this is a new roster and a new supporting cast moving forward. Philadelphia will only get better with time.
“The more I get used to playing with him and we get our spacing down pat to where I’m at and get in the lane and make plays for him and other guys, we’re gonna get a lot of better,” Curry finished.
The Sixers open the season on Wednesday against the Washington Wizards.
