It has to be hard to be a Jets fan on any day, but especially yesterday. Boy oh boy that all must have hurt. I mean, my goodness, the pain they must have experienced.
I’m talking, of course, about how the Jets went out to Los Angeles and stunned the NFL world by beating the Rams, 23-20, for their first win of the season.
This wasn’t a fluke win, either. The Jets led the entire way and had a 20-3 lead in the third quarter before making some defensive plays down the stretch to seal the deal.
But here’s the thing – if you’re a Jets fan your heart likely wanted to see them win a game because going 0-16 is just bad for your soul, especially in this terrible year. But your brain knew that a win was a very, very bad thing because the Jets are chasing the No. 1 draft pick.
Well, now with this win the Jets would no longer have control of the No. 1 pick if the season ended today. The Jaguars have taken over in the race for Clemson QB Trevor Lawerence, who is expected to be a franchise QB at the NFL level.
So the Jets lost while winning, which is so Jets.
I can’t imagine how torn Jets fans must have been down the stretch of Sunday’s victory in Los Angeles. They had to have heard everyone making fun of the Jets for doing the wrong thing by trying to win a game but there was no way to shut those people up. Well, a loss would have done that but the Jets were too good on Sunday to let that happen.
Not all is completely lost for the Jets, however. They will close the season with two very loseable games – home against the Browns next week and then at New England in Week 17.
The bad news is that the Jags, who are also very bad at football, have two very loseable games as well against the Bears and Colts.
Sunday’s win by the Jets could be a costly one that dooms this doomed franchise for many years to come. There’s no telling that Lawrence is going to be a sure thing in the NFL, because it’s really darn hard to predict which QBs will be able to make such a jump to the NFL.
But Lawrence alone would give the franchise and its fans at least some hope that things could change for them in the future.
Now the Jets need to get back to their normal losing ways ASAP and hope the Jaguars somehow get lucky once in their last two games.
If not, the Jets will have only themselves to blame for winning.
