Believe it or Not: New York Jets score on their eighth-straight opening drive

Which NFL team has scored on each of their last eight opening drives? Why, the New York Jets, of course!

The Jets under head coach Adam Gase have been an unmitigated disaster this season. They came into Sunday’s game against the Rams with an 0-13 record and just 183 total points — by far the fewest in the league. But if there’s one thing Gase’s team seems to be able to to, it’s score on their first possession of any game.

This streak continued for the eighth straight game, when Sam Darnold hit running back Ty Johnson on this 18-yard score.

It takes a lot to keep losing when you score early, especially when you consider that in their last six games, the Jets scored first.

  • The streak started in Week 7, when the Jets had a 10-0 lead on the Bills before losing, 18-10.
  • Then, Sergio Castillo hit a 39-yard field goal after Patrick Mahomes had already hit Mecole Hardman on a 30-yard touchdown pass, and that ended predictably with the Chiefs winning, 35-9.
  • Then, the Jets went up 3-0 on the Patriots due to a 35-yard field goal before losing, 30-27.
  • Then, La’Mical Perine’s five-yard touchdown run against the Chargers put the Jets up 6-0 before the inevitable 34-28 loss.
  • Then, Castillo hit a 38-yard field goal to give the Jets a 3-0 lead against the Dolphins before a 20-3 loss.
  • Then, Darnold hit Jamison Crowder on a three-yard touchdown pass to put Gang Green up 7-0 against the Raiders. Of course, that was a 31-28 loss.
  • Then, Castillo executed a 45-yard field goal against the Seahawks, which only delayed the 40-3 spanking.

And now, this beginning against the Rams. We expect the same kind of end result, but you have to give the Jets credit for getting on the board before they faceplant as only they can. Who would have thunk it?
