Oklahoma wins sixth-straight Big 12 Championship with 27-21 win over Iowa State

It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t easy, but Oklahoma is the champ again. The Sooners tried to give it away, they did, but then they didn’t.

It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t easy, but Oklahoma is the champ again.

The Sooners tried to give it away, they did. Up 24-7 heading into halftime, Oklahoma let Iowa State back in. The Cyclones clawed all their way back to 24-21, but a game-winning interception by Tre Brown iced Oklahoma’s six-straight Big 12 Championship with a 27-21 win.

The story, of course, was the Sooners defense. In 2020, Oklahoma is playing defense. The Sooners held Iowa State to 21 points behind an endless wave of pressure from Nik Bonitto, Ronnie Perkins, Isaiah Thomas and Perrion Winfrey. The Oklahoma secondary had three interceptions and the front held Breece Hall to under 100 yards of rushing and the Iowa State offense 3,6 yards per rush.

Marvin Mims caught a huge 45-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Spencer Rattler didn’t have his best game, but the Oklahoma quarterback facilitated three touchdown drives and got a touchdown of his own on the ground.

After Iowa State scored to make it 24-21, a big kickoff return by Tre Brown put Oklahoma in a favorable field situation. The Sooners put together a nine play, 41-yard drive and a Gabe Brkic field goal extended the lead.

Iowa State drove in the 2:01 it had left. Brock Purdy was incredible in the second half, leading Oklahoma back, but his two interceptions put the Cyclones in the position they were in. All the way down to the Sooners’ 34-yard line Purdy took Iowa State, but he was flushed right on third-and-11, threw up a prayer and Brown came up with it.

Oklahoma has won a Big 12 Championship every year since 2015. It’s the Sooners 12th outright and 13th overall Big 12 Championship.
