The Arizona Cardinals have been active in looking for help at kicker. Zane Gonzalez is out for the second week in a row with a back injury and they will use 38-year-old practice squad kicker Mike Nugent this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles.
However, they have now brought in a pair of kickers in the past few days for tryouts, according to the NFL transaction report.
Earlier in the week, they brought in Italian kicker Giorgio Tavecchio. On Friday, the Cardinals worked out Brett Maher.
Maher is 31 years old and has been on and off NFL rosters since 2013. However, he only played in 2018 and 2019 in the regular season for the Dallas Cowboys.
In two seasons, he played in 29 games and made 49-of-66 field goals and 68-of-69 extra points.
However, he has only made 8-of-16 kicks between 40-49 yards and is 10-of-15 beyond 50 yards.
He has spent time with the Cowboys, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Washington Football Team and Houston Texans.
He was on the practice squads of Washington and the Texans this season.
Depending on how things go with Gonzalez, it is possible he gets placed on injured reserve, Nugent gets added to the 53-man roster and then one of their tryout kickers — Tavecchio or Maher — are added to the practice squad. That would not happen until next week because of COVID testing protocols.
