Mass exodus continues: QB Ja’Quinden Jackson to enter the transfer portal

The No. 3 nationally ranked quarterback is leaving Texas and entering the transfer portal. It remains to be seen if he would change course.

The mass exodus is continuing with a quarterback heading for greener pastures. It had been reported that freshman quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson was contemplating heading into the transfer portal.

That report has since been confirmed by Inside Texas. Jackson was the No. 3 ranked dual-threat quarterback who signed with the Texas Longhorns in the 2020 recruiting class that finished with the No. 8 composite ranking according to 247Sports.

Jackson is just the latest in the long list of players who have recently jumped ship from Austin. He was likely to be in a battle with Hudson Card and Casey Thompson in the 2021 offseason for the starting quarterback position if Sam Ehlinger decided to leave for the NFL following the season.

The four-star composite prospect was the No. 10 ranked player in the state of Texas and No. 73 nationally. Alabama, LSU and Oklahoma were also pursuing one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. This could signal one of three ideas being kicked around.

  • Sam Ehlinger is leaning towards returnings or
  • Hudson Card is viewed as the next starter or
  • They asked him to switch positions

All speculation but this is yet another blow to the roster as top talent is leaving Austin. Jackson was listed as the No. 4 quarterback on the depth chart.
