Spartan fans everywhere rejoiced on Thursday when the team finally incorporated the Gruff Sparty logo onto the football helmet. Click here if you haven’t already seen the new awesome helmet that Michigan State will be wearing this weekend against Penn State.
But apparently this was supposed to have been the second newly released helmet this year, according to head coach Mel Tucker. During his weekly radio show on Thursday night, Tucker said the Spartans had another new script “State” helmet planned for the Maryland game before it was canceled due to COVID-19.

All season MSU has kept it interesting with their uniforms and helmets in particular. There’s been some subtle changes (last week the face mask was changed from green to white) and they’ve brought back the blocked “S” logo to honor George Perles. But the Gruff Sparty helmet was the first true completely new look for MSU and it sounds like we could be in store for another new helmet next year as well.
MSU basketball has brought back the scripted “State” look quite a bit in the last five to 10 years. But we’ve never seen it on the football team so I can only imagine how awesome that would look.
Let’s hope this scripted “State” helmet makes an appearance next year, since COVID-19 ruined that unveiling this season.
