Dolphins resigning WR Isaiah Ford to practice squad

Remember that time that the Miami Dolphins traded wide receiver Isaiah Ford to the New England Patriots for a 2022 conditional 6th-round draft choice? And everyone was in disbelief that the Dolphins would be so bold as to trade with their divisional rival, the Patriots? Well, the Patriots cut Isaiah Ford over the weekend — which in turn has led to the news that came through yesterday afternoon.

The Dolphins are resigning Ford to their 2020 practice squad, completing an odd excursion for Ford’s 2020 campaign. The good news? Miami will still presumably receive New England’s 2022 6th-round pick — meaning that the Dolphins simply leased Ford off to the Patriots for a month and a half for a future Day 3 pick. That’s a pretty good deal.

The better news?

The Miami Dolphins welcome Ford back into the fray less than two weeks away from the Dolphins’ rematch with the Patriots — a critical AFC East showdown that Miami must win if they hope to sustain their diminishing hopes of winning the AFC East. The Patriots won the first game of the season between the two by a score of 21-11 — but now Miami is clearly playing better football and hopefully can take advantage of Ford’s time inside the Patriots building to uncover any key factoids that could lead to victory.

We’re certain the Dolphins didn’t draw it up this way, but what a beautiful turn of events for Miami to see the player they’ve traded spend a month and a half inside the building and then get cut and return just ahead of the next showdown. Of course, the Dolphins must first take care of business against the Kansas City Chiefs — or at least try to. The Chiefs will come to Hard Rock Stadium this Sunday for a clash of two teams with a combined 19-5 record, the biggest clash of teams during a Dolphins regular season in quite some time.
