Let’s just get out ahead of this conversation, because I know that Boston is going to be having it over the next few months. And it’s going to be a regular one: Can Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots fix [insert former first-round quarterback]?
With the Philadelphia Eagles benching Carson Wentz for Jalen Hurts this week, the conversation will be whether the Patriots — among other teams — might take a shot at acquiring Wentz this offseason to give him a fresh start. But Wentz likely won’t be the only high-pedigree, low-performance quarterback in need of a career reclamation. There’s a whole gang of them.
We might see the quarterback carousel sweep up the Jets’ Sam Darnold, the Washington Football Team’s Dwayne Haskins, the Bears’ Mitchell Trubisky and the Giants’ Daniel Jones. And, yes, Wentz may be on the move, too.
Every time things are looking grim for each guy, we’ll see GIFs and memes on Twitter: Belichick!?!?!?

Wentz’s contract makes him somewhat tradable, though he’s not really an enticing option, considering just how unimpressive he’s been aside from his 2017 season, which seems like the exception to Wentz’s rule: he’s mediocre. Because of Wentz’s deal, the Eagles would probably need to trade him before the 2021 league year starts in March.
But alas, that won’t stop Twitter from putting on its thinking cap — or its tinfoil hat — and suggest Belichick can fix this guy, who just needs a new spot (that has no receivers or tight ends in the way of a supporting cast — but never mind that). Because so many former first-round quarterbacks are likely to come available, and because the Patriots have an expiring contract with quarterback Cam Newton, New England should prepare for the sports world to wonder whether Belichick will redirect this or that fading career — or even this and that fading career.
Wentz is the first and he certainly won’t be the last.
