Vols’ opponent: History of Colorado men’s basketball

Profiling the history of the Colorado men’s basketball program. The Buffaloes are UT’s upcoming opponent.

The University of Tennessee men’s basketball team will finally open its 2020-21 season Tuesday when it hosts Colorado at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. EST.

Colorado is a member of the Pac-12 Conference, but the Buffaloes previously played in the Big 8 and Big 12.

The Buffaloes are coached by Tad Boyle.

Under Boyle’s guidance, the Buffaloes won the Pac-12 tournament championship in 2012.

Boyle has also taken Colorado to the NCAA Tournament four times (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016).

Some notable players to play basketball for the Buffaloes include Chauncey Billups, Burdette Haldorson, Jay Humphreys, Cliff Meely and Jaquay Walls.

Billups played for Colorado from 1995-97 and was a first-round pick in the 1997 NBA draft, going to the Boston Celtics with the third overall selection.

He played in the NBA for Boston, Toronto, Denver, Detroit, Minnesota, the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Clippers.

After a stint as a studio analyst with ESPN, Billups entered the coaching arena and is an assistant coach for the Clippers.

In 2004, he led the Pistons to the NBA title and was the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player.

Haldorson played in Boulder from 1951-55 and won two Olympic Gold Medals.

Humphries played for Colorado from 1980-84 and went on to play in the NBA for the Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, Utah Jazz and the Celtics.

Meely starred for the Buffaloes between 1969-71. He would play for the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers between 1971-76.

Walls played for Colorado between 1998-2000. He transferred to Boulder from Compton College, a successful community college program in Southern California.

He played for the Cincinnati Stuff, of the International Basketball League, and also played professionally in Europe.
