Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger passes Patrick Mahomes

With Sam Ehlinger’s 274 yards passing on Saturday, he passed the reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes on the Big 12 leaderboard.

During the Texas Longhorns victory over the Kansas State Wildcats, senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger continued to climb the Big 12 record books.

With Ehlinger’s 274 yards passing in the game, he passed reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. That is quite the name to pass given how he has taken the NFL by storm — very much the same way he was lighting up the scoreboard for Texas Tech.

Ehlinger has 11,276 career passing yards. He passed Mahomes (11,252) for the No. 8 spot in Big 12 history. The next name on the list is also a former Red Raider, Kliff Kingsbury. To match his number, Ehlinger will need to come back for another season. Kingsbury threw for 12,429 yards in his four years in Lubbock.

With Ehlinger’s pass to Malcolm Epps late in the third quarter, he matched another Mahomes number. They are tied for seventh all-time in Big 12 history with 93 touchdown passes. Ehlinger can get past Kingsbury at No. 6 with three more touchdown throws this year. Kingsbury had 95 in his career.

As far as total touchdowns, the former Austin Westlake quarterback has accounted for 126. He is tied with former Oklahoma Sooners’ quarterback Landry Jones for No. 4 in Big 12 history. He is eight behind Colt McCoy for the most in school history.

The last milestone Ehlinger passed was 13,000 yards of total offense in a career. He is one of seven quarterbacks in Big 12 history to achieve this feat. The only other Longhorn on the list is Colt McCoy. Provided Ehlinger can account for 463 yards of offense in the Longhorns’ last game plus the bowl game, he will move into sixth just behind McCoy.
