The New York Jets were about to win their first game of the season on Sunday when suddenly it was stolen away from them by Raiders QB Derek Carr, who hit Henry Huggs for a 46-yard TD pass to win the game in the final seconds.
But was it really stolen from the Jets or did the Jets give it away on purpose? If you look at their defensive call on that play it sure seems like they gave it away on purpose, which was the right thing to do.
Listen, the Jets stink and they don’t want to win a game and risk losing the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, where QB Trevor Lawrence will likely be the top pick.
So why does it feel like they gave it away on purpose? Let’s look at their defensive call:
The Jets defensive coordinator was directed to lose this game. That’s the only explanation.
The Jets ran Cover 0 with a spy on Derek Carr at the 50 yard line while up by 4 with 13 seconds left

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but watch this and tell me the #Jets weren’t trying to lose this game.
Cover 0, with 13 seconds left & you spy Derek Carr like he’s Mike Vick in his prime?? pic.twitter.com/FR53RF1sxU

Jets going cover 0 in that situation is an all-time bad coverage call. They knew exactly what they were doing

Here’s some more proof:
The Jets are the only team to send 8+ pass rushers on a play in the last 30 seconds of a game this season.#LVvsNYJ | #TakeFlight

Derek Carr was surprised, but grateful:
Derek Carr: "I couldn’t believe they all out blitzed us. I was thankful."

It was the right thing for the Jets to do, which is why it was so surprising that they did it!
