The Houston Texans take on the Indianapolis Colts to kickoff their season series with their AFC South foes. If the 4-7 Texans can hang a W on the 7-4 Colts, it will give the defending division champs renewed hope as they carry on without receiver Will Fuller and cornerback Bradley Roby.
Unlike last year, the Colts have upgraded at quarterback with 39-year-old Philip Rivers, who is playing football reminiscent of his penultimate season with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2018. Rivers has solved Indianapolis’ problems under center, and they have added two key free agents in cornerback Xavier Rhodes and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
The Texans have to find a way to stop the run. Houston is still among the worst in the NFL when it comes to shutting down the opposition’s run game, and Indianapolis has a dynamic rookie with Jonathan Taylor in the backfield. Combined with receiver T.Y. Hilton, tight end Mo Alie-Cox, and the Colts’ impressive offensive line, the Texans defense has their work cut out for them.
The matchup is the first time since 2012, and the second time in the series overall, that the Texans have had their first encounter with the Colts in December. That was also the last time they played Indianapolis twice in a three-week span. How it goes at NRG Stadium could be how it goes at Lucas Oil Stadium in a fortnight (not in Fortnite).
