ESPN analyst David Pollack endorses Matt Campbell as the Texas head coach

While everyone is discussing Urban Meyer for the Texas Longhorns job, ESPN analyst David Pollack thinks that Matt Campbell should be the guy

All anyone is talking about prior to the Texas Longhorns matchup with Kansas State is Urban Meyer. The rumor mill is running wild with thoughts of getting the three-time National Championship winning coach to the Forty Acres. If not Urban Meyer, who could the Texas brass get to fill the eventual opening for the Longhorns?

According to an article from 247Sports, college football analyst David Pollack is endorsing Matt Campbell.

“If you’re going to give me (Matt) Campbell, I’d take Campbell,” Pollack said. “Campbell is one, the guy to me. Here’s what I want if I’m at Texas. First of all, I’ve got to realize I don’t get the same elite talent I used to. I want a guy that has proven to me that, if their roster says eight wins, they can get 10. If their roster says 10 wins, they’re going to get 11. I want that kind of coach. I want a coach that has a vision that’s going to embrace that kind of stuff, embrace development. I don’t think there’s anybody better than Matt Campbell for that.”

Going to disagree with Pollack on the talent aspect, there have been articles published on how talented they are. According to 247Sports, the Longhorns have the fifth-most talented roster in the country. They fall behind the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Clemson Tigers. The Longhorns are the only one of the five not at least competing for a conference championship, much less the College Football Playoffs.

What Campbell is doing at Iowa State is very impressive. That same study showed that the Cyclones have the 57th most talented roster in the country. That puts them eighth, only ahead of the Longhorns’ next two opponents the Wildcats and Jayhawks in the Big 12.

It feels very much like running back Breece Hall’s comment, “five-star players vs five-star culture.” Campbell has this team ready to play for a conference championship, if they win it will be the first time Iowa State pulled it off since 1912. They are right in the target zone of finding a way into the CFP if a few teams ahead of them drop in the coming weeks.

Is Campbell the right choice to replace Tom Herman? I can’t decide at this point but he could be an option if they strike out on Urban Meyer.
