The 2021 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines will be held Jan. 28-31 but without fans in attendance.
The Century Club of San Diego is the nonprofit organization that operates the PGA Tour event and made its no-fan announcement in a release on Monday.
“We recognize that COVID-19 requires dramatic modifications to the operations of our annual event,” said Century Club CEO Marty Gorsich. “We have been working closely with the PGA Tour as well as the County and City of San Diego in our planning. The safety and well-being of everyone affiliated with the Farmers Insurance Open and our community remains our top priority. While we will certainly miss the energy our fans bring to Torrey, we remain focused on delivering a PGA Tour competition that showcases the best players in the game set against the backdrop of one of the most storied courses in the world.”
The tournament is the fourth event in 2021 on the PGA Tour’s schedule. It comes a week after the American Express at PGA West in La Quinta, California, and a week before the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Scottsdale.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions, Jan. 7-10, 2021, is the first event in the new year. The Maui News reports that a limited number of fans will be allowed on site there. However, the second event on the docket, the Sony Open in Hawaii, will be contested without fans at Waialae Country Club, according to the Honolulu Star Advertiser.
The American Express had previously announced it would be held without fans.
The Thunderbirds, the organization which runs the Phoenix Open, is hoping to have fans at TPC Scottsdale but there will be nothing close to the daily attendance that typically reaches the six figures.
